Otherstar blinked her clear blue eyes and pondered. She pondered just about anything a cat like her could ponder. Each of her lives. Respect. Love. Patience. Strength. Wisdom. Safety. Faith. Faith. It was a life she treasured most of all, but not just because it was important. Her father loved her, and she felt a horribly sickening love and connection with him. Not because of anything she thought, no, but her love was sickening at the thought that he was dead. She was almost like him in every way. Why had he died? Why had everyone died? All the cats she had once held dear were gone! Only Devil's-paw was alive, and she was mentored by her mother. So much for mentoring, with Otherstar having so many ponder sessions. She had abandoned her current kits to the other Queens. Did cats suspect she was not their mother? She certainly was! Just no mother who wanted to sit around and do nothing.
Otherstar sighed, shaking her head. She remembered the cats who had given her lives. Eric and his mate, Ebonytail. Moonracer, Silvermoon, Moonstar, Foxkit, her father Tigermoon. Tawnyfoot, her half-sister, and Tawnyfoot's and Eric's father and Moonracer's old mate, Strongjaw. Then there was the advice Forestwing had given her. She had known Forestwing, why had he given her advice and not a life? Why had Strongjaw given a life in his place? What was the significance in Strongjaw? She wasn't sure, but she stopped thinking about the cats. Her mind flickered to her daughter, Angel's-kit.
Was Willowpaw the same kit Otherstar thought had died? Otherstar was certain. Why had she chickened out on speaking with her? Otherstar was not so certain. Was she afraid of ruining her daughter's new, probably better, life? Willowpaw seemed so nice with Inksky, could they possibly be the same cat? Could the events that had unfolded possibly cure her of her selfishness? It seemed Otherstar was thinking of more questions than answers. She stopped to try and answer everything.
Everyone died because death is something that strengthens us. Maybe others suspected she was not her kits' mother, but she was. Maybe Forestwing gave advice because she would remember it. If Strongjaw had given her advice, would she have taken it seriously? No, she wouldn't have. She had once crushed on Forestwing, to learn he was her half-nephew. How creepy that had been! Strongjaw was important to some of her family, and therefore she must respect him as well. Willowpaw was the same kit, her kit. She was too scared, yes. She might ruin Willowpaw's new life, just make everything difficult. She was the same cat, indeed. The events must have cured her snobby, bratty selfishness.
Otherstar nodded, watching the grass stalks before her wave and shimmer like gold. She certainly did live in a beautiful territory. Then she thought she saw cats through the grass, in the distance. Standing, Otherstar raced up to them. Suddenly, she stopped - she was walking across the pond! Glitter Pond, indeed, was right beneath her yet she did not sink! Gasping, the she-cat caused ripples. The ripples revealed a very familiar tom. It was Twitchpaw, but much older and much more handsome than now.
He was with a silvery she-cat with sparkling blue eyes, who was the picture-perfect cat for beauty and glamor. She wondered who this pretty TrueClanner was? Not certainly yet a TrueClan cat, but if she was with Twitchpaw than she was a TrueClanner. Twitchpaw was not a Clan-denying tom. She saw her daughter, disheartened in the distance. Suddenly, the she-cat ran opposite of Twitchpaw. Heading to a different home. Was she a loner? A rogue? A different-Clan cat? Otherstar blinked confused. Maybe she was thinking things wrong.
Suddenly, Otherstar couldn't breath. She gasped, struggling for air, finding nothing but water. She looked around, and blinking realized the lake was no longer beneath her. She was in it. So she had never walked on water after all, but had seen a vision. Paddling frantically, Otherstar pushed to the surface and found footing not too far from where she was. It was a ledge of pebbles that dropped into sudden blackness below. The glittering, shimmering surface beauty might make it appear welcoming, when rather it was a death-trap to a poor, unsuspecting swimmer.
To any cat watching, the scene would've appeared much differently. Othertsar would've suddenly stood, running and splashing through the waves. Instead of running through golden grass to the lovers, she had crossed through crystalline water. When she had seen herself standing on water, she had actually reached the drop-off and gone under. She had seen the vision, and then run out of breath. One might've thought she was going for an enjoyable swim, but the look on her face said concern. Maybe suicide? Maybe she had lost something, or someone, to those waters? Was it caused by Foxtail? Questions only Otherstar could answer...
