CHAPTER ONE

Sol's reddish pelt flashed in the early morning sun. it had evidently rained the night before-the trees surrounding Toreador Packs camp were dripping heavily, causing the forest to be alive with a melodic drip, drip, drip.. Shaking his damp pelt, he stared out into the trees, where the mountains stood. The sun was peeking above the mountain top, only to be covered by a thick cloud bank. momentarily, the fog lit up in the suns rays, shining all gold and silver, until the clouds claimed their prize and made the pretty mist just look gray and tedious once again. It had been raining for a while now. Yesterday they had a break from the wet spell, but it seemed as if mother nature couldn't hold for that long, and let rain come down easily while every cat was asleep. He pawed the ground angrily, wishing they could get some warm, dry weather around here. Rain Season had just ended and Dry Season was starting, but the rain didn't go away. It hadn't rained that much in Rain Season, so maybe mother nature was making up for it, by drenching the pack and the bordering pack, Torrid Pack. That pack lived in a cove near the ocean, so they were probably dry right now. He twitched his whiskers emotionally-he didn't want to hear callie, the torrid pack leader, boast about the warm dens and dry nights her pack was having, just to toss it in Toreador Packs face. Stretching out the nights sleep, he padded over to the fresh kill pile, where his sister, Skip, sat with the other apprnetice in their den, Yarrow. They were gossiping.
"So I heard Shock and Whisper had a thing for eachother when they were apprentices, but it soon ended after Shock found her real mate, Twilight." Yarrow jabbered. Yarrow was an outgoing, spunky she-cat. Her favorite pastime was talking about the warriors in their pack. He rolled his eyes and picked out a thrush and sat down next to the females, having nothing better to do.
Skip raised her chin proudly. She always tried to out-gossip Yarrow, and it usually worked.
"Oh, reallly?"She asked, obviously having something better to say. "Our mother, Sunrise, was always with our father, Sky." Her voice lilted off to sadness when she mentioned her fathers name. He and a few others had went of on an expedition to scout out new territories for Toreador and Torrid Pack. Notails, or humans, had steadily moved closer and closer to the two packs. Although Torrid Pack could be safe in their coves, they decided to make the journey with Toreador Pack, just in case. What worried Sol was that they may never find a place like there current home. He loved this place-it had an even mix of open, wide fields, dense forests, and spacy forests. There was plenty of prey, for both Packs. But the Notails were huge threats, and it was only smart to move away. He was so busy in his thoughts he hadn't noticed the conversation jump to a new subject.
Why do you think Torrid Pack wants to leave with us, if we do end up leaving? They are pefectly safe." Yarrow said, staring off into the distance. Brhind the mountains was the ocean, where Torrid Pack lived. Skip shrugged and finished the mouse she had begun on.
"They'd probably get bored." She said in one tone. His sister stood, shaking water off her pelt, and tossed a bored glance to Sol and Yarrow. Her usual lustful, excited green eyes were dull and bored.
"I say let's go hunting. Without our mentors." Most if the cats in camp were still sleeping. The early patrol had returned and were already tucked safely into their somewhat dry dens. Canary, a lean yellow-gold warrior, was on guard. Her eyes stared out blankly into the forest. She was deep in thought.
Yarrow blinked excitedly.
"The Gap?" She asked, and Skip nodded slyly. The apprentices discovered The Gap when they were 7 moons old. It was a small gap behind the wise one den where the tangle of trees subsided. It was big enough for a small warrior to wriggle through. Quietly, as not to disturb the grumpy wise ones, they slipped through The Gap easily. They were free! Sol raced into the trees, startling some robins that were trying to find food. Skip flicked her tail in annoyance.
"We're hunting, mouse-brain, not acting like kits." She hissed crossly. Just then, a rustle in the leaves took her attention. Crouching low, she spotted the culprit-a dark brown plump mouse. She pounced, killing the mouse easily. Yarrow let out a soft whoop!
"Nice catch." She meowed warmly. Sol rolled his eyes. I coulde do better. He listened for that distinct rustle noise. The time it was much louder. Stalking through the trees, he wondered what the noisemaker was-a huge, fat rabbit? A big bird? He got close to the noise, which was behind a bush thicket. Yarrow and Skip had followed quietly. Leaping out of the bushes, he lanrded on somethings back-much to big to be a rabbit. It was another cat. The cats friends looked up, starrtled, and turned tail to flee. Yarrow and Skip blocked their path.
Scrambling up from his 'prey' he gazed upon a pretty, creme colored she cat with tender light blue eyes. She looked shocked. He scented Torrid Pack off the cats, but he was so transfixed by the she-cat..She seemed about his age, maybe a little younger. Her friends, two males, seemed edgy and scared. Skip's raspy voice broke the silence.
"Stupid Torrid Pack beasts. Get off our land." She hissed, claw unsheathed. The males took off running, but the female was a little slower. She had her eyes on Sol.
"Hi, I'm Dove." She said Breezily. Sol swallowed.
"I-I'm Sol." She paused, glancing at Yarrow and Skip's bared teeth, and took off running. Sol watched her go. Skip let her guard down.
"I'm glad we snuck out. At least we got rid of those rotten cats." She said, flicking her tail. Sol nodded absentmindedly.
"Let's go home," He said quietly, Dove still fresh in his mind.
