Graystripe gave Firestar one last sad, longing look before turning back to Sanstorm. He could feel her feelings, almost-she wanted to be loved, before kits came into the picture. "Sandstorm...if it makes any difference, i've loved you for a long, long time. Since Silverstream, even...."

Sandstorm was instantly snapped back into reality and not into sad dreams of loneliness. Her eyes turned dark and she bared her fangs ever so slightly. And then she spoke in a tone fiercer than most she had ever used before. "Can it, mousebrain. You and I are alike, breaking the Clan's rules and bending them into preferred shapes. But you never loved me nor I you, and you know it." She turned away from him, her eyes shining with the hurt that he would lie to her. She had started to feel something for him, but now she realized it was probably just the kits.

Graystripe rolled his eyes. "Don't be so box minded. I was so jealous of you and Firestar. So mad....I went off with Silverstream. And look where that got me." He broke off in a bitter tone, remembering Silverstream's sudden, and painful, death. He was glad, so glad, Sandstorm hadn't ended up like that. "I've always had my eye on you...not in a creepy way. Even as apprentices."

"There's no need to be rude, sassypaws. Firestar never liked me either. I don't care, just don't lie like that. I know I'm not liked, and I can handle that." She said with a fiery glare, before turning away from him to look at her kits. They were definitely more beautiful than she could ever have imagined, and she loved that very much.

Graystripe wished he could grab her and shake sense into her. "Why can't you believe me, Sandstorm? I wouldn't lie about that." His searing glare suddenly softened. "I can't lie to you." He said simply.

"Well that's just sad. I could lie to anyone." She said dryly, not even bothering to look up at him. She didn't need to. There was absolutely no need to lie to him. He was lying to her enough that anything she said now might even be considered a lie. Suddenly she realized she'd never find a mate who loved her the way she deserved.
