it was not often that graystripe found himself at the great sycamore. in fact, he rarely ever came here. he much preferred hunting closer to camp. what brought the tom to the big old tree was an unknown mystery. but he felt a pull the the area. a strange pull. making his way closer and closer to the tree, and realized absolutely no one was around. good. sometimes he needed a little quiet time. he was always trying to help firestar keep the clan in order. a pang of sorrow shot through him. he had always wondered why firestar had picked shadowblaze as deputy, and not he. but oh well, shadowblaze performed the duty well, and graystripe was just happy that thunderclan was thriving. especially with all the new kits. not that he'd have any.
sitting between the roots, he had heard other warrior talking about how sometimes prey hid in the crevices the sycamore provided. standing up, he shook moss scrapings from his pelt and inhaled deeply. it was a gray, cloudy day, so what he mainly picked up was a threatening tang of rain. but hidden in those scents was a mouthwatering juiciness, waiting to be brought to the freshkill pile. he spotted a mouse scuttling through his moss scrapings and pounced, catching the mouse pf guard. it was dead in almost and instant. proud, he searched the tree for more prey evidence. sticking his head into a root hole, he found no prey their. he attempted to pull his head out. but it wasn't working. he was stuck. panic heated up his pelt as he tried and tried to get out of his mess. he eventually resorted to crying out for help, his calls slightly muffled from the tree bark. a spark of sunlight shot through the dreary clouds, hitting graystripes back. he could feel the burning starting. his sighed exhaustedly and called even louder. Sandstorm heard the familiar cry of the tom who had made her sad and happy at the same time. She hurried to find him stuck in the roots of the Great Sycamore. Sandstorm laughed rudely and walked over to Greystripe. "You old fool." She said plainly, taking her teeth and biting through one of the roots that held Greystripe's head fast. It broke and she pulled it back, releasing the grey striped tom. "But we're both fools now, you hear? You've got to come with me." She commanded sternly, turning and padding away. She didn't even check to see if he was following her brisk pace. She knew he was.

Graystripe stared warmly at Sandstorm, but he didn't get to say thank you. She had ordered him to follow. He obeyed. He wondered why Sandstorm thought herself was a fool. What had she done? Besides, Sandstorm was one of ThunderCkan's greatest warriors. What could've she done wrong? Graystripe kept up with her brisk, fast, and obviously important pace. He didn't mind walking faster and faster, as long as he got to find out Sandstorm's problem. He liekd Sandstorm, he really did, but something told him they'd never be mates, ever.

[[Unless you want them to be. xD But Millie's nicer]]
Sandstorm eventually stopped at a tree that had once housed a bird of some sort. Inside a little squeal went out and she quickly removed three kits from the old nest, setting them by her side. "Hmmm?" She asked unhappily, hoping that he would get what she meant. They were both fools and now she had more kits to care for.

[[They could be mates for now, and once Graystripe meets Millie..well, Gray is going to be taken by the Twolegs, and he'll meet Millie, and expect he and Sand are over.]]
Graystripe stared at the kits for a minute. His heart skipped a beat. He had only ha done litter, with Silverstream, and she had died...he was so glad Sandstorm hadn't met that fate. He blinked a few times, and ecided to speak. "Well, er, this is...great." He said, still in disbelief. These kits would have a mother to take care of them, unlike Featherpaw and Stormpaw...he shook his head, but in happyness. "Sandstorm..." He said quietly. But he had nothing to say.

[[They will be by then. xD ]]
"You idiot. Now what?" She asked unhappily as the kits squealed and squeaked. "What will the Clan think?" She bit her lip, afraid to mention the only idea she had. "Does it mean we have to pretend to be mates now?" She said uneasily, not sure what was left to do. After all, she and Greystripe had accidental kits and were stuck with nothing better to do then pretend. But did she really wnat to so soon after Firestar? And was it right to be his best friend's mate? She rolled her eyes and realized that he could probably care less. He didn't love her anymore anyway.

Graystripe knew what she was thinking. "I guess. I'm sure Firestar won't mind, Sandstorm. He wants whats best, for both of us." He said sympathetically, eyes warm. "Besides, Me and you both want the kits to be happy. They'll never be happy if we aren't together." He thought about a story he had heard in Windclan, involving the deputy and his ex-mate. They had split up after a tragedy, and the kits barely knew them now. He did not want that to happen, he'd never let it happen!

[[And Streak still doesn't like that Badger moved on]]
Sandstorm nodded and sighed, stroking the kits with her tail. "Let's go home then, Greystripe." She said with a soft smile as she picked up two of the kits. One was black and whie, the other striped and grey. She left the cream-colored kit for Greystripe to carry back home. She turned and padded wordlessly off to the camp and wondered what the Clan would think. But it didn't really matter, so long as Greystripe didn't leave her like Firestar had. And Jua. She had no luck with toms.
[[And then Grey leaves her and her last mate gets her killed. -headdesk-]]

[[poor sandy. maybe someday, in the future, i'll make the perfect tom for her.]]
Greystripe nodded and picked up the creme colored kit, the one most resembling his 'mate'. Maybe, maybe...if he got Sandstorm to fall in love with him, they could be forever mates. He hoped so. He did not like Sandstorm. He, hard to admit, loved her. He'd die if anything happened to her.

[[She's going to die by the paws of her next mate after Grey, Tilly. So that wouldn't really work. xD But for now make Grey the perfect mate for her, kay?]]
Sandstorm slowly padded back to camp. When she reached it she hurried past the startled stares of cats and into the Nursery which was now empty after the most recent Ceremony. She set down her kits and began to groom them fiercely. The black and white she-kit was the youngest, but the first to be cleaned and start nursing. Next came the grey tabby tom that looked like his father. And finally, came with Greystripe the one kit that resembled Sandstorm most, a cream she-kit with a darker patch down her back and tail. All had fluffy, thick tails and thick pelts. "I was thinking Swiftkit after your brother for the striped one, Dustkit, after Dustpelt my old friend, for the cream one and Ravenkit after Ravenpaw for the black and white one?"

Greystripe purred. "Those are fantastic names, Sandstorm." He said, licking her ear, cause he spotted some apprentices picking through the nursery's tendrils. He especially liked how she named one Swiftkit. He remember his little brother sadly, killed by dogs... shaking his head, he sighed with contentment.

"Good." She said and even though she had not noticed the apprentices she nuzzled him. Maybe she had finally found a tom that would care for her and love her like she deserved. Because being stuck with others who hated her and were only with her until they found somebody else was a drag, and she didn't like it. Maybe she had finally found her destiny, to be Greystripe's mate. Maybe.

[[But I just replied! xD]]
Firestar hurried into the Nursery as the news had only just reached him. Now with her kits being apprentices, she had quickly found another mate as well. It made him happy to know that dear old Sandstorm might finally be happy. He popped into the Nursery and smiled at the three little kits that would now live there. "Hello, you two."

Graystripe spun around and stared at his fiery friend. His pelt glowed in the dim nursery light. Looking at his own pelt, he realized his was dingy in comparison. Dipping his head, he wondered if Firestar was angry with him. "Greetings, Firestar." He meowed formally, even though the two were best friends. Might as well give him respect considering Graystripe 'stole' his friends ex-mate. Glancing at Sandstorm, she wondered what she was thinking at this moment. "What brings you here? Clan gossip spreading around?" He smiled half heartedly, hoping the other warriors weren't saying things about him and his mate. Er, his partial mate. Sort of Mate. Looking up at the brambles of the nursery, he saw some gaps in the ceiling. He'd have to cover those up so his mate and kits wouldn't get cold in freak weather. Or get wet in the rain.

Firestar smiled and nodded at Greystripe. "I'm glad Sandstorm finally found a loyal mate." He said with a soft smile, trying to ignore the fact that Greystripe no longer seemed to think of him as a friend. The way he had spoken so formally, it had given Firestar chills. What did Greystripe think of Firestar now? Had Sandstorm poisoned him like she had Firepaw? Sandstorm rolled her eyes, apparently knowing what Firestar was thinking at the moment. Probably worried sick about something or other she had done. The relief he'd feel about leaving her if he had known the truth. Known who the kits really were. But she wasn't about to jeopardize her spot in the Clan to make some cruel, sick tom happy. No, she'd make him suffer. It was better that way.

Graystripe sensed some type of silent conversation between his mate and his best friend. He hadn't been the most awesome of friend lately, though. Graystripe's heart gave a sympathetic twinge. But he wanted to stay with Sandstorm and his kits.

Firestar nodded, obviously being dismissed. He sighed and turned, padding off. But not without another word. "Congratulations the two of you." He said, padding off toward his own den. Sandstorm shook her head and turned to look back at her 'mate'. She stroked her kits and realized that she still had yet to have kits with a tom who had loved her before they were born.
