Fernwind strolled along the Stepping Stones, her long and sumptuous tail softly grazing the rocks below her. A heavy cloud of mist was receding upon her and the weather was getting colder, but the young femcat didn't cease her pace. She knew there was a river somewhere close from here and she was ardent to find it. It was quite small, she knew that part, but she was nevertheless anxious to swim in it. Fairly enough, not far from the Stepping Stones, a narrow but wide rivulet was brimming between several thick boulders that gave the impression of the river being even more narrow. Fernwind grinned and headed towards it, not intimidated by the perceptibly crummy weather.
The river ran steadily, carrying its cargo of small fish, twigs, and other random assortments of things along with it. The gurgle and lap of the water against the riverbank was soothing, music to her docile cat's ears. Her light grey pelt felt hot in the afternoon sun and the thought of a swim crept into her mind. Sliding gracefully into the water, Fernwind returned to her element. She kicked out powerfully, propelling herself through the cooling liquid. As her body temperature went down, she began to think about the coming months.
Crude mornings like this one crushed the spirit of the animals in the forest, something Fernwind didn't miss. Small creatures scurried more quickly than ever, storing nuts and berries to be consumed during their long sleep. Birds were becoming scarce, flying to warmer roosts. The water itself was cooling at a remarkable peace and Fernwind soon found herself a bit uncomfortable in the chilly water. She headed for the bank, shaking her head to clear the water from her eyes. As she scurried up the bank, the river water sliding easily off her sleek pelt, a delicious smell reached her nose. A small water vole, crouching unsuspecting nearby, was chewing on a shrivilled root. Fernwind crouched into the firmiliar position and caught the poor creature in moments. Her stomach grumbled but she put the vole apart and decided to save it for her camp. She wondered idly if anyone would come in this direction. ooc; yeah it's pretty crappy... sorry, haven't rped in ages : (

The chilling winds brought with them the strange thought of rain. The river had run low, then high, due to the weather massive shifts. But now it had settled down to its perfect, normal height. Its gentle lapping sounded like soft pawsteps, footfalls that echoed through RiverClan like a lost warrior. It made the day bright with joy to hear the soft splash of fish, the gentle ripples they created ringing out like the waves of sound they most beautifully produced. A day that any cat would be jealous over. And certainly the coming rain could only mean more beauty after a refreshing shower.
Because of this wonderful day being so great, Runningflight had decided to take a pleasant stroll through the territory. He walked through the patch of woodland, waded through shallow eddied spots in the river, and had a wonderful time. He gathered some herbs, treated some cats, and then just relaxed. Of course, the thoughts of the previous Medicine Cat Meeting always came flooding in like the river after a powerful rainstorm. And that strange TrueClan Medicine Cat Apprentice, because of all that he had told poor Runningflight. He sighed as he let the river carry him down lazily along the bank. Suddenly, he noticed Fernwind up on the bank. Stopping himself and half-walking half-swimming along the rocky river bottom he clambered out of the water and smiled at her. "G'morn." He said lazily, his mood as easy as the day seemed to be.

Fernwind held back a yelp when Runningflight appeared so suddenly out of the water. She leapt away from the river to let the tom reach the shore and tried hard to not scowl after the fright she just had to endure. 'Good morning...' Fernwind's eyes widened when she realized she didn't remember this tom's name. She cozened a sneeze and then squinted a her clanmate with a feigned innocence. Meanwhile, her mind roamed through all the male names of RiverClan. Runningclaw... No... Darkflight... That can't be right... Oh right, Runningflight! She finally remembered. 'Good morning Runningflight!' Fernwind saluted, this time more enthusiastically. She wondered what would motivate this tom to come to this area, since it was allegedly not known by many RiverClanners. She debated against that rummor, since this little summer was very close to the Stepping Stones, so any cat roving in this place would find it. Still, the weather wasn't one that would draw many cats to this river at this moment. Fernwind decided to start conversation with Running... Wait, wait, I know, I know... Runningflight. She decided to start a conversation with Runningflight about what bought him here and decided, for once in her life, to be polite. Fernwind nearly jolted at that thought, but it'd probably be funny to find herself in that situation. 'So Runningflight, what brings you to this river with this very nasty weather?'

"Nasty? I thought it was a nice enough day." He said innocently, smiling at her. A gentle breeze played through his fur as its cold breath sung a tale about the coming storm, whose grey clouds hung like death in the horizon. "Actually, I was taking a day off. Sort of. I wanted a day to relax, and it seems so beautiful and peaceful today. Look around." He exclaimed with a vibrant purr as he sat down and began to lick himself absently. He wasn't the most attentive tom, but even he could see that she didn't remember him quite. "S'okay you forget my name. I do, too. Even though its moons old now, I'm too used to Runningpaw." He assured her with the soft smile that was his own. His thoughts lazily began to drift back to Thyme, but he shook them back to the present. No way was he about to think on that again. Not now. Not ever if it could be helped. Could it be helped? He sighed and tried not to think on it again. The cold breath of the air sent a shiver down his spine.

Fernwind opened her mouth to protest but closed it back again. She had forgotten his name and he had noticed, so there was little point to deny it. She smiled a little at the tom's cordiality and began to twitch her tail, part of her seldom nervous habits. Indolently she wondered when this tom would start revering her for her good looks like most toms did. She really couldn't help being as disdainful as she always was. Either way, she hadn't been praised for her appearance for quite a while and she missed the attention. If she had to, she'd abide conversation with this fella just to get a 'How pretty your eyes are' from him. She tried to ignore the fact that she was so lonely she actually wanted to make a little pal to talk to. 'Most people remember me like Fernpaw as well.' The femcat said. Her eyes wandered elsewhere, not really sure what to talk about. What else could people talk about rather than herself? She felt a brisk waft embrace her spine and the desire to be accompanied grew even more. The lumbering clouds that drifted not far from her were vanquishing her spirits but she found an odd feeling of comfort with Runningflight by her sight. Though that was the real reason of why she wanted his friendship, she hid it behind her self-absorbed demand and extrinsic necessity of being appreciated. 'So, um... When do you think this weather will get better? I mean, we are in New-Leaf.' The weather. She was starting a friendship by talking about the weather...

Runningflight purred in amusement. He smiled at Fernwind, who was really looking beautiful at the moment. A clap of thunder shook him back to reality. "This is pretty much Newleaf as we know it. I like the thought of refreshing rain to revive the dying earth." He said in a dream tone, smiling softly on Fernwind.

Fernwind smiled back but her smile was empty. The awkwardness between the both RiverClanners didn't seem to be restraining as she had hoped. It seemed making a friend was harder than it seemed. Fernwind squirmed in her haunches, idly glaring back at Runningflight and at the sky. Her eyes rolled from place to another, unsure of what to say at the moment. What could she talk about with Runningflight? The clan? Boulderstar? Apprentices? They all seemed topics she was completely remote about. Runningflight probably didn't care about them either. Her mind perused senseless ideas and plans that at the end of the day narrowed down to mild triviality. She sneezed on porpoise to fill the silence and just stared at the water. She felt a bit annoyed by the tom; this wouldn't be happening if he had began praising her like most toms did, but he hadn't. Why hadn't he? Fernwind began feeling upset. Runningflight wasn't like the rest.
The she-cat twitched in her seat and began debating with herself. Leave or stay? She felt like leaving, mostly because Runningflight was proving to be completely irksome and hadn't said a word of complement to her. It was a shallow reason, but sometimes she couldn't help it. However, part of her wanted to stay and become friends with him because she found that feeling of... 'protection' with him. It was odd. Fernwind sighed and glared at him, wondering what was linking them together. Then finally, she thought of a question that couldn't have been more random or less anticipated. 'Ever been to a Twoleg nest?'

Runningflight burst into a fit of laughter, looking at Fernwind and smiling. "You have very beautiful eyes." He said randomly, smiling and turning away in embarrassment. He hadn't meant to be such a mousebrain but he had to say something to her. And saying what he couldn't help thinking seemed to be the only thing left. "And no, I haven't been to a twoleg nest."

Fernwind smiled. Finally, he was acknowledging her good looks. She giggled like she usually did whenever this occurred.
'Thank you' she said, smiling warmly.
'Well I was once. I lost a bet to some friends when I was an apprentice so I had to go in one. It was pretty nice though. The twolegs gave me free food (which tasted awful) and embraced me, and that was real nice.'
She sat in front of him, peering curiously at his deep eyes. 'So what exciting things have you done?'

[[ Okay ]]
"My life isn't very excited." He said with a smile, finally feeling a bit more warmed up to the she-cat. After all, his life had never been much of an adventure anyway. "But the old Medicine Cat, Foxtail, actually begged me to become Flameheart's apprentice. I never learned why..." He shrugged sadly, wondering what life would be like if maybe he had refused and had become a Warrior instead.

'Well some excitement is ought to come from that' Fernwind pointed out, lashing her tail. 'Medicine cat stuff is always... mysterious and profound. I bet Foxtail saw you in a massive battle and you had to cure everyone in it, and because of your... curing abilities, RiverClan won.' Fernwind shrugged, not really sure how else to interpret the message. 'What does it feel to be a medicine cat apprentice?' she asked suddenly.

Runningflight nodded and smiled. "Sometimes. But I think most of the time being a Warrior is much better and much......." His voice faded as he thought he saw a pair of eyes watching him. Suddenly, a mouse darted from some brush and leaped straight up into the air, climbing from his head down his tail and leaping away quickly. The dark eyes vanished and Runningflight blinked in confusion. "What was that?" He asked. Had it been a sign of some sort, or just coincidence?
