Wolfhowl took a deep breath as he entered the tunnels into Mothermouth. The fear in his heart ran side by side with his excitement. I will be RiverClan's leader... never did I imagine this. Are you proud of me, mother? The kit that disgraced you, yet you still loved? The kit you were forced to abandon to the other Clans? Are you proud of me? Wolfhowl hoped so, but he could only wait as he stood before the Moonstone. He was scared, but the ancient rite echoed in the chambers, bringing him the courage of many past leaders. He crouched and gently touched the stone with his nose. The world spun in his gaze and he blinked open his eyes to see he was standing before the Great Rock at Fourtrees. Stormstar stood, not the old cat he had known for so long, but a young and beautiful she-cat with dazzling eyes and a smile that brought joy to his heart.
"Wolfhowl.... welcome." She purred. She approached and the two touched noses. Her starry presence overwhelmed him, and he breathed in her sweet scent, almost intoxicated by it. Stormstar took a step back and beckoned to the warriors of StarClan to approach.
"Today you will recieve your nine lives." Stormstar said proudly. The first warrior was a black tom with a white stripe across his face. Wolfhowl recognized him and smiled as he approached.
"It is good to see you, Junglepaw." He purred. The tom smiled slightly. He then stooped forward and touched noses with Wolfhowl. The tom felt a cold shock run up his spine, numbing him almost instantly.
"With this life I give you ferocity. May you channel this power and use it to protect your Clan and the forest." Wolfhowl felt a horrible pain tearing through his chest, and he yowled as he dug in his claws and braced himself. The next cat to approach was a ginger patched she-cat with a crooked smile and bright eyes. Wolfhowl started.
"Honey?" He inquired curiously.
"Betcha didn't think loners were invited?" She purred. She touched his nose and her sweet scent wreathed him.
"With this life I give you compassion for all cats. I hope you use it, furball." Wolfhowl could feel the sorrow and anger of so many cats - especially poor Honey - raging within his chest, and he braced himself for the impact once more, struggling not to fall. Honey did not rejoin the ranks of StarClan, but bounded to Stormstar, touched noses with her, then raced away into the horizon, her tail leaving a trail of little silver stars. From among the StarClan warriors then stepped a sleek, delicate she-cat with sparkling hazel eyes and a fine tabby pelt.
"M-mo..." Wolfhowl couldn't force the word from his lips. The she-cat gave him a sad smile and touched his nose gently.
"With this life I give you understanding. May you feel that your heart will always guide you." He watched his mother leave him, her herb-tinted scent fading as the feelings of claws tearing his chest returned. Spottedleaf was the next to come. He was not very surprised by the she-cat's appearance, but it was still a little unexpected. She touched his nose and he was startled by her sweet scent and even more ethereal presence.
"With this life I give you justice. I pray that it will guide you to the truth." She murmured. After the feelings of pain subsided three more cats came. One was Wolfhowl's father, a ThunderClanner, who came him a life of commitment to what he believed was right. The next was the old leader of RiverClan, who gave Wolfhowl the gift of courage and pride, to lead his Clan well. The other was a she-cat Wolfhowl had known for some time but she had died before he rejoined the Clan. She gave him a life of caring and mentoring, so that he would raise not only kits but warriors and elders to follow the warrior code and his leadership. Only two lives left. Wolfhowl thought. The eightth life was given by a strange silver she-cat with green eyes.
"I give you the life of legends. May you learn from the histories of other Clans and other cats, leader of RiverClan." She said. As she touched his nose he could sense her own life; the tragedies that had led her astray, and her last mingled prayer for mercy as she lay dying in the boggy territory of her evil Clan. He dipped his head in respect and she dipped hers in return. Finally Stormstar approached, her eyes filled with sorrow and pride.
"With this final life I give you the life of paitence. May it reward you well in the days to come." As she touched his nose he could sense her message. Wait. Do not be as rash as I was. As she stepped back, the ranks of StarClan began chanting...
"Wolfstar! Wolfstar!"
